1. Chihuahua
Dogs don’t get smaller than the tiny but mighty chihuahua! Typically weighing between 2 and 6 lbs (1) , these pets require little food and exercise—just walking from one end of the apartment to the other is quite a journey for them. They have a smooth coat that only occasionally needs grooming, and they shouldn’t shed much hair on your couch or bed. They tend to be affectionate and highly active, so plan frequent play sessions. 2. Shih Tzu
Long prized by Chinese emperors (the name Shih Tzu means “Lion Dog” in Mandarin), these (3) dogs are just as suited to apartment living as to life in a grand palace. Despite their small lap dog size (usually 9 to 10 in tall), they can be surprisingly hefty (9 to 16 lbs). They’re loving and loyal but typically aren’t overly territorial: they get along with just about everyone, children and other dogs included. Though their long coat requires daily grooming to prevent matting, they shed very little and are thus often described as “hypoallergenic” dogs. (4)

3. Toy poodle or miniature poodle
The miniature poodle (typically weighing 10 to 15 lbs) and smaller toy poodle (5) (just 4 to 6 lbs) bring plenty of brains and heart in a small package. Poodles are known to be highly intelligent, adaptable and trainable. Some can even learn to use a litter box, which comes in handy when an outdoor bathroom break involves an elevator ride or several flights of stairs. Their long, curly hair requires daily grooming, but they shed very little, making life easier for people with dog allergies (6) . Expect frequent play sessions or teach them tricks to keep them mentally stimulated.

4. Cavalier King Charles spaniel
Cavaliers offer all the love and affection of a toy breed in the sporty physique of a hunting spaniel. Standing about 13 in tall and weighing between 13 to 18 lbs, they are known to be highly loyal, playful with children and for getting along well with other pets. Who could resist such an adorable face? However, because they can form such strong bonds with their family, they do best with human companionship and minimal time spent alone. Help prevent excessive barking and destructive behaviour by providing plenty of toys and exercise. Their silky, wavy coat of hair requires only occasional grooming, and shedding shouldn’t be an issue.

5. Basenji
Are you concerned your dog’s barking will be an issue with neighbours because of your unit’s paper-thin walls? The “moderately small” basenji (standing about 16 in tall and weighing 22 to 24 lbs) is famous for making quiet, yodel-like vocalizations rather than barking. Their short and smooth coat requires little maintenance because these dogs naturally tend to be fastidious groomers. They have a high energy level and need mental stimulation, so plan plenty of brisk walks around the block and trips to the nearest park.
